GOP eyes Senate health care vote next week, amid grumbling

Melody Ballard | 23 June, 2017, 05:03

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has faced backlash for the perceived lack of transparency behind the health care bill negotiations, but insisted that there will be "plenty of time" for discussion. John Thune, R-S.D., and Majority Whip John Cornyn, R-Texas, speaks following a closed-door strategy session, at the Capitol in Washington, Tuesday, June 20, 2017. Sen. Democratic senators hold a hearing hosted by Democratic Policy and Communications Committee Chair Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., left, with Sen. They say the program has provided coverage to millions of low-income adults and played a key role in battling the opioid epidemic ravaging their states. More than half a dozen GOP senators have expressed problems with the measure, and a defeat would be a humiliating setback for Trump and McConnell on one of their party's top priorities.

"We believe we can do better than the Obamacare status quo, and we fully intend to do so", said McConnell, R-Ky.

Moderates who are on the fence about whether to support the Obamacare overhaul are likely to be pleased at the bill's approach to subsidies because they would be based on financial need, potentially preserving coverage for more people who got insured under the ACA. But he said at thrice-weekly Republican luncheons and at private meetings with GOP senators the issue has been discussed, with the contents of those discussions often shared. "It's going to be important to get the president's support to get us across the finish line". The Congressional Budget Office is then expected to release its non-partisan analysis of the bill early next week. Another report from the federal Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services predicted that number would be 13 million. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, who also represents a state that expanded Medicaid under the ACA.

"By pushing their craven Trumpcare bill without knowing its impact on our people and our economy, House Republicans have committed congressional malpractice and lied to Americans", Booker wrote.

"The first concern is how many people will lose coverage and what do the demographics of that group look like", she said.

Like the House measure, the Senate bill would eliminate two central requirements of the current health-care law: that individuals provide proof of insurance when filing their annual tax returns and that companies with 50 or more employees provide health coverage for their workers. "While the Senate is talking about adjusting the House bill, it is still largely working with the same components which are quite unpopular".

An estimated 23 million people could lose their healthcare under a similar plan narrowly passed last month by the Republican-controlled House, according to the CBO. It has come under widespread criticism from Democrats and helped prompt some moderate House Republicans to vote against the measure.
