Jonathan Paul Koppenhaver, who changed his name legally to War Machine during his fighting career, attacked girlfriend Christy Mack and her male friend Corey Thomas after finding them in Ms Mack's bedroom in 2014.

After the media frenzy, War Machine took to Twitter to say that he meant to propose to his girlfriend of the time before he found her in bed with another man.

Mack, shown here in March, said in court Monday that she knew Koppenhaver would try to kill her if and when he gets out of prison.

.

"I don't know if my life will feel complete in 12 years or 30 years and neither do you, but I do know when he gets out he will kill me", she said in court.

Thomas was choked and punched for several minutes while Mack was left with a fractured eye socket, other facial fractures, a lacerated liver, broken ribs and two lost teeth.

Meanwhile, his attorney, Jay Leiderman, tried unsuccessfully to lobby for a new trial, claiming that it was a case of "blind rage" and that he had insufficient time to prepare for the case.
