Despite having the franchise's lowest debut, Cars 3 dethroned Wonder Woman to claim first place at the North American box office this weekend. This marks a 30 percent drop for the DC film, whose domestic and global totals now stand at approximately $274.6 million and $571.8 million, respectively.

But while the movie fared well with audiences (an A on CinemaScore) and received favorable reviews, it didn't perform as high as recent Pixar sequels Toy Story 3 ($110 million) and Finding Dory ($135.1 million) did on their opening weekends.

Meanwhile, the weekend's biggest surprise was "All Eyez on Me", with the Tupac Shakur biopic shattering modest expectations to capture third place with a domestic gross of $27.1 million in its opening weekend. The movie, which is a Tom Cruise-starring reboot of the 1999 film of the same name, earned an estimated $13.9 million this weekend for a cumulative domestic box office haul of $56.5 million. Hollis also cited new character Cruz Ramirez, voiced by Cristela Alonzo, as an important part of the film.

Despite being knocked down to second place, Wonder Woman still had an impressive showing. While this was enough to easily win the weekend, it is below openings of past films in the franchise, with Cars hitting $60.1 million and Cars 2 hitting $66.1 million. Only one in four critics had praise for the movie, in which Demetrius Shipp Jr. plays rapper Shakur. Pixar spent around $200 million on "Cars 2", not including marketing, according to Box Office Mojo.

Rounding out the top five this weekend is newcomer 47 Meters Down with an estimated $11.5 million from 2,270 locations. The project combines the talents of director and co-writer Lucia Aniello, co-writer and actor Paul W. Downs, and star Ilana Glazer - the three are frequent collaborators on Comedy Central's "Broad City" and "Time Traveling Bong".

Sony Pictures' R-rated comedy "Rough Night", featuring Scarlett Johansson and Kate McKinnon, was a miss with a take of $8.1 million, or only about half of the $16 million projection of BoxOfficePro.com.
