Apple reveals watchOS 4: Siri-powered updates, fitness syncing, and music playlists

Lori Graves | 06 June, 2017, 07:00

Apple is likely to bring a swathe of new functionalities for fitness and activity tracking, including adding new sports such as skiing and snowboarding to the Activities app.

The new watchOS 4 will be available for developers in preview form starting Monday while the upgrade will be coming to everyone this fall. Glanceable information on the watch face isn't a new concept-plenty of Apple Watch faces include information like date, time, and calendar events.

Additionally, come watchOS 4, Apple's wearable will feature a variety of additional Watch faces to choose from, including a new Kaleidoscope watch face - featuring a series of Digital Crown-controlled special effects, as well as new Disney character faces including Toy Story's Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and Jesse for your customization pleasure. The face automatically displays all the info that's most pertinent to you using machine learning, so it can adjust to your usage patterns and settings to provide the most applicable info depending on the time of day. The Siri watchface, as the name suggests, learns from your routine, and shows relevant information based on time and your location.

Unfortunately we didn't get the third party watch face store we were hoping for. One of the biggest updates - or at least the most visible - here are to be found on watch faces. Notifications in Activity are now more personalised. Do you think there will be more hidden features in the platform?

watchOS 4 includes a new app dock that's easier to swipe through, a flashlight feature that can also serve as an emergency beacon. You touch it and call up a pool swim measurement. Apple has also added high-intensity interval training to the Watch and it's now possible to set up a queue of workouts to fire one after another, which could be helpful for something like triathlon training.

With GymKit, customers using their favorite cardio equipment will soon be able to pair their Apple Watch directly to treadmills, ellipticals, indoor bikes or stair steppers from global manufacturers such as Life Fitness and Technogym with a simple tap. This is a feature many heart rate monitoring chest straps have, but not many modern smartwatches or fitness trackers. That means you will have the ability to link and work with smaller wireless products.

Apple just announced its watchOS 4 for the Apple Watch at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) of 2017.

The Music app has been redesigned as well.

You will also be able to chose a playlist that automatically stats playing as soon as you start sweating it out in the gym.

Tim Cook during the keynote said, "watchOS 4 is a great update". Also, the new iPad Pro will feature increased compatibility with Apple's stylus, and the Notes app will now serve to register the user's handwriting.
