The star of the show happens to be the Core i9 Extreme processor at $1999, which Intel claims is the first desktop processor to pack 18-cores and 36-threads.

Intel has unveiled new variety of Intel Core X processors including more powerful Core i5 and i7 CPUs along with a whole new range of beastly Core i9 chips.

All the Core i9 CPU's will also be part of Intel's new X series. Essentially a rebranded version of the company's Broadwell-E line of "extreme" processors, the newly-announced X-series sits at the very top of Intel's desktop enthusiast range, designed for customers who want the absolute best performance. In terms of chip architectures, nearly all of the Core X family is built on off an updated version of Intel's 6th generation Skylake platform, which the company refers to as Skylake X. The two 4-core models at the bottom of the range - the i5-7640X and the i7-7740X - are built on Kaby Lake X. Based of an improved version of Skylake (called Skylake-X), the chips will come in 16, 14, 12 and 10 core variants. As you step up the price ladder, each rung adds two processor cores and four threads, topping out at 16 cores and 32 threads for the Intel Core i9-7960X, which retails for $1,699. But this time, Intel has brought out its high-end SKUs which is on par with today's chipset architectures going up with the likes of Skylake-X and Kaby Lake-X CPUs. This is the same as last year's 10-core processor, but way in excess of the 91W TDP from the i7-7700K.

About the Core i9, these Intel chips feature base clock speed of 3.3GHz, reaching up to 4.3GHz dual-core speed with Turbo Boost 2.0 and 4.5GHz with Turbo Boost 3.0, which implies that there's plenty of room for overclocking.

Intel is facing off with AMD in the battle for share of the high-end computing market, and it has a new weapon in the fight.

Now coming to the lowest model, the Core i5-7640X costs $242, offers 4-cores and 4-threads.

They're insanely expensive. Intel estimates $1,999 for the 18-core Core i9-7980XE, on top of the cost of the rest of your PC.

At the time of that announcement, Intel said that Coffee Lake chips would offer at least 15% better performance than their predecessors.
