US accuses Syria of mass executions and burning the bodies

Carol Daniels | 16 May, 2017, 10:20

Syria has built a crematorium at a prison outside of Damascus to "cover up the extent of mass murders" by President Bashar Assad's regime, according to a USA official.

Jones said Washington is not specifically accusing Moscow or Tehran of complicity in the alleged Saydnaya killings, but said Russian Federation is aware of and has supported other abuses.

"And according to multiple sources, the regime is responsible for killing as many as 50 detainees per day at Saydnaya". An Amnesty International report earlier this year estimated that between 5,000 and 13,000 people were executed at Sednaya in the last four years.

Amnesty's report, Human Slaughterhouse, said prisoners are moved in the middle of the night from their cells under the pretext of being transferred.

"In light of the failures of the past ceasefire agreements, we have reason to be skeptical", he said.

Jones said he had not yet presented the evidence to Russian officials.

"We demand that the Syrian authorities immediately cease extrajudicial executions and torture and inhuman treatment at Saydnaya Prison and in all other government prisons across Syria". "But in order for us to work together to bring an end to the violence in Syria, Russia and Iran need to acknowledge the atrocities of the Assad regime and use their influence to stop them".

"Simply put, the killing and devastation has gone on for far too long in Syria", Nauert said. His administration now says Assad can not bring long-term stability to Syria.

The department released commercial satellite photographs showing what it said was a building in the prison complex that had been modified to support the crematorium.

UN Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura, speaking to reporters in Geneva on May 15, said he was glad to see the new U.S. administration get more involved in Syrian peace efforts.

A judge who claims to have witnessed hangings at the prison says victims are taken to a separate building, beaten and killed. It is inconceivable that these large-scale and systematic practices have not been authorised at the highest levels of the Syrian government'. He said that between 2011 and 2015, the regime has abducted between 65,000 and 117,000 people. The complex is located just 45 minutes outside Syria's capital of Damascus, the seat of the Assad regime's power.

But relations with Moscow, already dire under Trump's predecessor Barack Obama, have not improved and Assad has continued to bombard civilian areas in his battle with opposition rebels. Given these abuses, "Russia must now with greater urgency exercise its influence", Jones said.

He said the U.S. has not shown Moscow the photos of the crematorium, but that they have "an ongoing conversation with the Russians" about their failure to condemn Syrian atrocities and the climate of tolerance that creates.
