Infosys H1-B visa restrictions: Infosys to hire 10000 Americans

In 2013, Infosys agreed to pay $35m to settle a visa dispute with U.S. authorities, involving alleged abuse of visa requirements when offshore staff are brought to the US. "That is something we have been working on for the last two and a half years". However, the number 10,000 decided for new United States jobs will only contribute to a tiny part of Infosys' entire workforce of over 200,000.

Sikka said the recent focus on the visa program didn't affect the company's decision to expand its USA operations, an effort that he says has been in the works for several years.

The location of the other three centres will be decided over the next few months.

A report suggests that last month, Infosys was applying for just under 1,000 H-1B visas this year. One of the sources said that was down from about 6,500 applications in 2016 and some 9,000 in 2015. Indian tech companies use the H1-B visa to send Indian techies to the US. In 2014, Tata again acquired the most visas, gaining entry for 5,650 H-1B workers. Indian technology firms use H-1B visas to send their employees to work at customer sites in the U.S., which is the largest export market for the $150 billion Indian IT industry.

"We are not only hiring computer science specialists but also engineers with software development aptitude and potential who we will train and prepare", he said in the interview.

India's IT services companies are seeking to showcase the benefits to local tech ecosystems as well as the communities beyond from the work they do, at a time when they are being seen to be party to replacing local jobs with cheaper imports.

The US government on Wednesday welcomed the move by IT major Infosys to employ 10,000 American workers in the coming two years, by stating that it was an outcome of the Trump administration's "pro-growth economic agenda".

Infosys is hiring for four technology and innovation hubs across the country, the first of which will open in IN in August. At the end of March 2017, Infosys had over 2 lakh people on its payroll.

Infosys on Tuesday announced that it will hire 10,000 Americans over the next two years, and open four Technology and Innovation Hubs (TIH) in the US.

Infosys, which added almost 18,000 jobs in 2015, slowed its hiring pace considerably, creating just about 6,000 jobs in 2016 amid market uncertainty caused by Brexit and heightened clamour for tougher United States immigration laws that led some USA clients to hold off new projects.

"We've been passionate and we've been laser-focused on creating a diversified economy where companies cannot only grow, but they can thrive and inspire", Holcomb said.

Clients in the USA contribute about 60 per cent of the company's software export revenue per year.
