Nokia was the first to place an iris scanner on one of their smartphones, and now Samsung has put the same on one of its tablets and now its flagship smartphones Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ have them as a norm.

He then sits down with a Samsung Galaxy S8 and registers his own irises to the phone, so that he can unlock the screen using his eyes. In fact, Samsung's new iris scanner is very easy to trick. And according to hackers with Germany's Chaos Computer Club, it's possible to fool that scanner it using nothing more than an ordinary contact lens and a photo of the owner's eye. Similar to fingerprints, iris scanning is completely unique and can not be replicated. The iris scanner, like the fingerprint sensor, provides a second layer of biometric authentication to the device, helping in keeping information safe.

CCC member and biometrics security researcher starbug was able to demonstrate that a good digital camera with 200mm-lens at a distance of up to five metres was sufficient to capture good enough pictures to fool iris recognition systems.

Unlike most models which can be hard to tell apart from each other, the designs of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the Apple iPhone 7 are strikingly different.

When held up to the phone, it was recognised as the eye of the person for whom the handset was registered to and unlocked itself.

Created by YouTube channel Concept Creator and based on existing sketches and leaks, the video shows a 3D printed Galaxy Note 8 concept unit that features an all-screen design as well as a vertical dual lens camera on the back.

Subtitles on the video state that the photo is taken using night mode, even though it's daytime, because the Galaxy S8's iris scanner uses the same sort of infrared light that night mode often does.

I've contacted Samsung about the trick, but haven't yet received any comment or official statement.

Not be overshadowed by Apply Pay, Samsung Pay gets rolling in Taiwan on Tuesday, with seven banks participating in the mobile payment and digital wallet service in the initial stage.

The company published an in-depth look at what's inside the Galaxy S8 on Friday, even though anyone interested in such details probably already knew what's inside of the phone. Many biometric unlock methods have been found to be vulnerable.
