New Cyber Chaos Appears To Have Been Avoided: Europol

Derrick Tucker | 16 May, 2017, 10:19

Europol chief Rob Wainwright said computer systems in more than 150 countries were hit, with the majority of organisations affected over the weekend in Europe.

A virus took over files and demanded $300 (£230) payments in order to restore access to them.

NHS Grampian said it remains "completely confident" no patient data was accessed in the ransomware attack, which hit 13 health boards across the country and countless nationwide, leaving some with a backlog of postponed appointments to contend with.

"We are continuing to experience some technical issues at the moment".

Global cyber chaos is spreading Monday as companies boot up computers at work following the weekend's worldwide "ransomware" cyberattack.

"It's very good to get the preventative messages out there, not just to save people from this particular one, but from other information security problems as well", he said.

Security experts said the attack appeared to be caused by a self-replicating piece of software that enters companies and organizations when employees click on email attachments, then spreads quickly internally from computer to computer when employees share documents.

This story has not been edited by Firstpost staff and is generated by auto-feed.

Officials say they're aware of those problems.

"An equivalent scenario with conventional weapons would be the United States military having some of its Tomahawk missiles stolen".

Power keeps Team Penske ideal at Indy Grand Prix
The only real surprise was Penske didn't have five cars in the top six. "You know capital of the world, motorsport", Alonso said. Team owner Sam Schmidt and 1969 Indianapolis 500 victor Mario Andretti will compete in their own race in semi-autonomous cars.

The attack is unique, according to Europol, because it combines ransomware with a worm function, meaning once one machine is infected, the entire internal network is scanned and other vulnerable machines are infected. But some experts have argued this attack could have been vastly mitigated if the NSA told Microsoft sooner.

Brad Smith, Microsoft president and chief legal officer, said: "We have seen vulnerabilities stored by the Central Intelligence Agency show up on WikiLeaks, and now this vulnerability stolen from the NSA has affected customers around the world".

A hacking group called Shadow Brokers released the malware in April, claiming to have discovered the flaw from the NSA, Kaspersky said.

Jace Tyrrell, chief executive of the New West End Company, which speaks for hundreds of traders on Oxford Street, Regent Street and Bond Street, said: "We are working closely with partners, including the Metropolitan Police, to review our resilience and update guidance to businesses".

The NHS has said hospitals have had to cancel some outpatient appointments because of the attack.

Victims ranged from Renault vehicle plants in France to the FedEx delivery company in the United States, as well as Russia's interior ministry and Chinese universities.

Nissan: The carmaker said in a statement that "some Nissan entities were recently targeted" but "there has been no major impact on our business".

The recent global cyber attack has affected more than 200,000 people - so should you be anxious about your own online security?

The number of ransomware-affected cases is still rising.

The attack has also hit 150 countries around the world since Friday.
