Humorous 'Guardians' set Marvel on new path for superhero movies

Melody Ballard | 15 May, 2017, 00:49

The first film brought us its mixed bag of characters.

The main man behind the first two films will return to write and direct "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3".

Set to the all-new sonic backdrop of Awesome Mixtape Vol. 2, Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team's adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos.

Amidst the catastrophic fall, Guardians 2 stood strong into its second weekend churning an estimate of $60 million during its second weekend.

Here are the worldwide highlights so far: China $80.5M; United Kingdom $42.5M; Russian Federation $23.1M; Germany $23.0M; Australia $20.1M; France $20.1M; Korea $18.6M; Brazil $17.8M; Mexico $17.1M; Spain $8.5M; Italy $7.4M; and Indonesia $7.2M.

After coming together as an intergalactic superhero team in the previous origin story, Peter "StarLord" Quill (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and Groot (Vin Diesel) are back to save the universe again, but on a more personal level. Now an adult, Peter has had to reconcile his unusual upbringing and the fact that he's put together his own little family - er, gang - of thieves who are now known as the Guardians of the Galaxy because they saved it all in a big adventure. The film develops each character even further, so be sure to pay attention to the challenges each character must face, either externally or within themselves. He's a space pirate who kidnapped a child and was a less-than-doting father figure.

"We spent a lot of time looking at sequels and the idea of sequel-itis", David Hollis, distribution chief for Disney, told Fox News, blaming poor quality as the number one issue why sequels ultimately flop. This article will have spoilers for the movie so if you haven't seen it then please stop reading and come back after seeing the movie! He is adorable and hilarious even though all he says is "I am Groot".

No other major film release was seen on the horizon this weekend. On top of that, many of this film's greatest jokes were given away in the trailers. In the first Guardians of the Galaxy we discovered the tragedy that changed his life and we found him years later, adult and already winning the role of Star Lord. With films like GOTG, Avengers: Age Of Ultron, Ant-Man, Captain America: Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War and Doctor Strange, Marvel has earned more than $1.17 billion in combined profits.

The dialogue makes for a hilariously good time when it wants to, but struggles in finding a balance between crude bathroom humor and serious moments meant to build relationships between characters. Nebula needs redemption too, she was little more than a glowering villain in the first movie.
