Huawei narrows gap with Samsung, Apple in smartphone sales - Gartner

Huawei competes head to head with Oppo in domestic and overseas markets Huawei narrows gap with Samsung, Apple in smartphone sales: Gartner

Samsung and Apple keep their top positions, but Chinese companies Huawei, Oppo, and vivo are accountable for nearly a quarter of all global sales. Samsung's share now stands at 20.7 percent, down from 23.3 percent in the first quarter of 2016, while Apple holds 13.7 percent of the market, compared to 14.8 percent in Q1 of previous year. However, its market share fell from 14.8% in the first quarter of 2016 to 13.7% last quarter.

Worldwide smartphone sales climbed to 380 million units in the first quarter of 2017, a 9.1 percent year on year rise that was again driven above all by China's top three device makers, said Gartner.

Chinese brand Oppo, which is little-known in the United Kingdom but extremely popular in its native China, enjoyed a 94.6 per cent sales increase, equating to a global market share of 8.1 per cent. The three Chinese manufacturers have begun to see sales in India, Indonesia, and Thailand as well due to aggressive marketing. Despite its P9 and P9 Plus being available for more than a year now, both smartphones continued to sell well, positioning Huawei as a dominant brand in the consumer market. Therefore, Oppo has achieved the best performance in the quarter in comparison to other device makers.

Apple is also increasingly facing fierce competition from Chinese brands, Gartner says, dubbing its performance in the market as "under attack" - and noting that third placed Huawei edged closer, racking up sales of 34 million units in the quarter. Huawei, for instance, grew its shipments from 28.9 million a year ago to 34.2 million in 2017.

Apple sold just under 52m iPhones during the quarter, while Samsung sold 78.6m phones.

Competition between China-based Huawei and rival Oppo for ramping up their smartphone shipments in the domestic and overseas markets are to intensify in the second half of 2017, according to industry sources. While Samsung has hit a roadblock with the Note 7 in the premium segment, the Chinese manufacturers like Huawei, Oppo, Vivo have made it a challenge for Samsung to stay on top in the mid range segments.

Huawei is slowly but surely narrowing the gap in sales with Apple, as it leads fellow companies Oppo and Vivo in growing their combined global market, according to the latest report from analyst firm Gartner.

In terms of operating systems, Android and iOS continue to dominate the market, with Android being used on 86.1 percent of all smartphones. iOS, on the other hand, is now running on 13.7 percent of smartphones.

NAFTA renegotiation, local rice farmers concerned
