Two days following a letter published by Marwan Barghouti, supporting the security prisoners on a hunger strike, live footage of the leader of the strike shows that he himself does not follow the terms of the strike.

In the video, Barghouti, a convicted terrorist serving five life sentences for orchestrating murderous attacks during the Second Intifada, can be seen apparently unwrapping food in his prison cell and eating it in his toilet stall.

With the footage, Israel was "trying to break the spirit of Palestinian resistance", but it would not succeed, the group said.

"As we've said all along, the terrorists' hunger strike isn't about their prison conditions, but only about Barghouti's desire to bolster his status in preparation for the day after Abu Mazen", Israel's Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan, referring to Abbas, told Israeli newspaper Haaretz.

The video was taken at the Kishon Prison in northern Israel, where Barghouti was transferred to solitary confinement after the hunger strike began.

Israeli authorities say 894 Palestinian prisoners have kept up the strike.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said his first meeting with President Donald Trump left him hopeful, but he did not appear to have come away with any achievements that move the needle on Israeli-Palestinian peace. If action is not taken as soon as possible, to put an end to the injustices faced by these prisoners, more people will die on hunger strike.

The protesting prisoners have issued a list of demands including better medical services, family visits and more dignified detention conditions. Israeli officials have dismissed the strike as a bid by Barghouti to burnish his credentials in an internal Palestinian power struggle.

"As I said from the very beginning, this hunger strike was never about the conditions of the convicted terrorists, which meet global standards", Erdan said. "While he was urging his fellow terrorists to remain steadfast in their strike and encouraging others to join, he himself was sneaking food behind their backs". He says guards stepped up punishment, seizing all personal items and leaving prisoners "with nothing except their beds".

The incident on Sunday was the latest in a 19-month-long period of sporadic street attacks by Palestinians against Israelis, and the bustling Damascus Gate entrance to Jerusalem's walled Old City where it occurred has seen many attacks.
