United CEO says no one will be fired for dragging incident

Kelvin Reese | 24 April, 2017, 06:09

Oscar Munoz, the CEO of the United Airlines on Wednesday said that no employee of the organisation, including himself, will be fired over the dragging of a man off their plane due to overbooking of passengers.

David Dao was visibly bloody and injured after the incident.

While the news spread quickly across many Asian countries (a key market), the airline claimed that it's too early to predict whether bookings will be affected.

He had initially said, in an internal email later leaked to journalists, that Dao had been "disruptive and belligerent" and staff were "left with no choice".

In particular, Mr Apfel believes that the incident should prompt airlines to re-examine their policies and procedures around overbooking flights, as has been called for by several politicians in the wake of the incident. Last week, Delta ca...

During a conference call to discuss United's quarterly report Tuesday, CEO Oscar Munoz said firings were not a consideration, even after the outrage the company endured when video of the dragging April 9 spread across social media platforms.

Donald Trump Plans Rally For Night Of White House Correspondents' Dinner
The announcement came a day after Trump dismissed the importance of the 100-day mark as a " ridiculous standard ". According to Trump's message, which he sent via Twitter , the event will be held in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

But he said the company had not considered sacking anybody over it.

Munoz's early statements on the incident were widely criticized. The airline is conducting a review of what happened with Dao, which is due April 30. United evicted Dao and three other passengers from the flight to make room for employees.

Dao's lawyer said the senior citizen incurred a significant concussion, suffered a broken nose and lost two front teeth in the incident, and that he would likely sue the airline, which also drew scorn after banning two young women wearing yoga trousers from a flight.

After moving within the economy cabin a few rows up, flight crew denied their request to pay a supplement for the seats, which United sells as "economy plus", and told them to move back to their original seats, Hohl said.

Munoz's assurances about employee job security is one of the immediate moves he and United have made in response to consumer backlash over Dao's treatment. The consensus estimate of 17 analysts surveyed by FactSet for United's full-year earnings has risen by 3 cents a share since the Dao incident.

"We've always thought to repay our customers' trust with the highest quality of service and deepest level of respect and dignity". Revenue, however, was up 2.7 percent, to $8.4 billion.
